When do dogs need to be licensed?

All dogs need to be licensed upon reaching the age of 6 months in the town where it resides. Or after the dog has been with the family for 10 days, if adopted.

Have you lost your dog's tag and it is not time to renew the license?

You need to obtain a new tag from your town office or city hall.

May a dog run *at large in the State of Maine?

It is unlawful for any dog to run at large except when it is used for hunting.
*At large means off the premises of the owner and not under the control of any person

What is the cost to license a dog?

For an "altered" dog it costs $7.00 to license, and for a dog that is not "altered" the cost is $12.00.

How do I get my sticker to affix to the back of my dog tag?

At the end of the online process you will have the opportunity to print out the 'sticker' and affix this to your dog's tag.

The Department of Agriculture realizes that the paper may rub or fall off the metal tag, however so may the actual sticker. The Department will be doing away with the sticker requirement for the 2007 licensing year, instead dog owners will receive a metal tag. If you prefer a sticker, please send your request to: animal.welfare@maine.gov and we will send you one in the mail.
